How To Change the World….And Benefit Your Brain.
It brings you to life. You know that rush of energy after you’ve helped someone. A joyful heart that’s ready to burst. Stress melts away... and you might even score a perma grin.
I experienced this over the weekend volunteering my time and donating books to an organization that teaches underprivileged elementary school children who’ve fallen behind in class how to read, setting them up for a successful future. I walked out feeling like a million bucks. Actually, probably more than that. Infinity bucks. I couldn’t...and still can’t...stop smiling and experienced an immediate reduction in stress.
Clearly, I felt great for helping others, but it turns out there’s a lot more going on here. I also benefitted my brain.
This phenomena is what psychologists call the “Giver’s Glow”. According to Stephen G. Post, director of the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care and Bioethics at New York’s Stony Brook University, this response is triggered by brain chemistry in the mesolimbic pathway, which recognizes rewarding stimuli.
Philanthropy “doles out several different happiness chemicals,” Post says, “including dopamine, endorphins that give people a sense of euphoria and oxytocin, which is associated with tranquility, serenity and inner peace.” Additionally, the February 2016 study “ “The Neurobiology of Giving Versus Receiving Support: The Role of Stress-Related and Social Reward-Related Neural Activity,” published in Psychosomatic Medicine: Journal of Biobehavioral Medicine, suggests that helping others may benefit the giver more than the receiver on a neurobiological level.
These findings also suggest that this is part of our natural biological design, a feedback loop that makes giving a part of a reward system that’s key to our survival as a species.
